Santander to Benidorm – alternative routes?

We regularly travel to Benidorm via the Portsmouth to Santander ferry and I’m wondering if there’s a better recommended route. We have a 6m motorhome and I find the drive relatively easy – although boring now!, and was interested to know if there’s a more scenic route. We normally do the drive over 3 days but I don’t mind if if it takes a little bit longer. I feel that stepping out of my comfort zone will help us discover new places.

We do the Dover to Calais Eurotunnel and travel down through France and into Spain. Our favourite stopovers are Limoge and Tarragona and takes us just over 3 days. Fuel costs us significantly more but it’s worth it as we class it as part of the adventure.

Same here. We’ve done most of the routes but this one is the most scenic. Not much different than England in the north of France but as soon as you get past Paris much nicer.

We’ve done this journey regularly over the last 10 years and we’ve settled on the Portsmouth to Santander ferry for ease. From Santander to Benidorm it’s about 8 hours, so on the outward leg we like to stay somewhere in the middle to break things up. Generally in one of the smaller villages on the outskirts of Zaragaoza. Our favourite is Utebo as it’s just of the AP-68.

On the homeward journey, we’ll try to get all the way to Logrono which is only an hours or so away from the port. We find this really takes away the stress of the next day.

24 hours on the ferry is not for everyone,  but we like being able to relax pre or post Spain drive. Depending on which ferry you get, facilites differ but some of them feel like a mini cruise.

Fly and rent a caravan in Benidorm, much cheaper and less stress 🙂

Is it that easy? Can’t find any sites in benidorm that allow renting apart from through the campsite and they’re not really caravans. Any help would be appreciated if you could point me in the right direction? Thanks in advance Jen
