Brits have been coming to Benidorm for years to celebrate the fancy dress party held in November. But, what most don’t know is that it actually forms part of a bigger celebration which starts the week before. Contrary to what some believe, Benidorm Fiestas were not constructed solely for the purpose of the British fancy dress party, the British party is actually a by-product of a religious festival held by local Benidorm families.
Some would say that the British were a little bit jealous and upon seeing the original Spanish Fiestas (Fiestas Mayores Patronales) in honour of Virgen del Sufragio and San Jaime, they thought they could go one better. And, that wouldn’t be too far from the truth, seeing that Benidorm now attracts over 30,000 visitors wanting to celebrate in fancy dress at the end of the main festival period! As a result, the Benidorm Fiestas (or fancy dress festival / November Fiestas as some call it) is now regarded as the biggest fancy dress party in Europe!
Here is what you’ve got to look forward to…this is from last year (2023).
The fiestas begin on the weekend of November’s second Sunday and end the following Wednesday; five entire days of celebrations, including a reenactment of the discovery of the Virgen, the flower offering at the church, the comedy parade, the float parade and ending with a massive firework display.
The fiesta dates back to the year 1740 when a boat appeared on the shore of Benidorm, dragged in by a violent storm. The boat was burnt to prevent a disease outbreak, but some local boys found the image of the Virgen del Sufragio, which they took to the church and built a chapel.
Expect the biggest and longest celebration with ‘LOUD’ fireworks, street parties, Peñas (family parties) and general fun and frolics. If you’re coming to Benidorm for a quiet relaxing break, avoid central Benidorm and the Old Town during this period. The Spanish can party equally (if not more!) as hard as the British!
Benidorm Fiestas:
